Matt Hillyer joined Walkinshaw Andretti United in 2022 as a Kangan Institute Apprentice before the Team found out he was also a talented race car driver, adding race car driver to his job title with the Team in 2023.
Starting out in go-karting at a young age, Matt competed in many state and national championships before moving into open wheel racing. In 2022 Matt won the Victorian Formula Ford Championship and went on to win the 2023 Australian Formula Ford Championship with eight race wins and 12 race wins respectively.
Matt’s journey with racing at WAU started in 2023 as he joined the team as their first driver of their entry into the Toyota 86 series. During his debut season, Matt achieved three race wins, a round win and a pole position in the scholarship series, and a podium in the main series. With these accomplishments Matt headed into 2024 with some valuable experience to build on.
Matt had an impressive 2024 season in the newly renamed Toyota GR Cup Series, achieving clean sweeps at both the Sydney Motorsport Park and Sandown 500 rounds. Matt was comfortably leading the series with six race wins, seven podiums and seven pole position starts. Unfortunately, a 64G crash wrote his car off, preventing him from finishing off the season, ending up P8 in the standings after completing 60% of the series.
After Matt’s strong development in the junior categories he was promoted to the Super 2 program with the team in 2025, where he has shown great promise.
