We’re backkkk!

Did you miss us? After a few months at home, engines are firing backup for the 2024 Supercars Championship, as we start off the year with a bang at the Bathurst 500.

Not only is it the first race of the year, but Ryan Wood’s first event as a Supercars driver, it’ll be an exciting weekend ahead!

The crew have been hard at work over the summer break making big changes to the cars in preparation for a big year, bring it on!

Format

There is three days of on track action with cars hitting the track for the first time on Friday for two 60-minute practice sessions.

Saturday sees qualifying in the morning to set the grid for positions 11-24, with the fastest 10 cars securing a ticket into the top-10 shootout for a lap around The Mountain all to themselves. Lights will go out for the 250km Race 1 in the afternoon at 4.10pm.

Sunday repeats the format as Saturday with Race 2 commencing at 3.05pm to round out the weekend.

The Track

What more can you say about Bathurst? 6.2km’s of the most amazing piece of road in Australia (and the world if you ask us…)

With 23 wild corners from Conrod to McPhillamy, The Grate to Forrest Elbow, it’s a hold your breath operation for most of the lap, which is just over 2 minutes long.

Tyres

We are starting off the year on the Dunlop Hard tyre, although there is rain on the forecast so don’t be surprised if the Dunlop Wet tyre gets a good run in.

Pitstops

There are a minimum of two compulsory pitstops for both races where cars must change at least two tyres in each stop.

Weather

There is a high chance of rain on Friday and Saturday but the weather is clearing for Sunday.

If you’re heading to the track, make sure you buy a WAU umbrella from the merch store to keep you dry this weekend!

How to Watch

Fox Sports and Kayo will have you covered for every session live across the weekend, while Channel 7 have you sorted Saturday and Sunday. For the fans in New Zealand Sky Sports will cover all of the on-track action.

Ryan Wood

“This is so surreal, I have dreamt about becoming a Supercars driver for as long as I can remember and this weekend it becomes real, I can’t believe it to be honest.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support from my family, partners and the team, it’s been a crazy few years that’s for sure but it’s all worth it now.

“I have looked up to Chaz growing up, not only because he is a great driver but he’s an even better person off the track, to be able to work alongside him this year is really exciting.

“To be starting my Supercars career at The Mountain is pretty special, it is one of the toughest tracks out there, so I’m excited to take on the challenge.”

“I’ve missed this, it’s been a good summer break, but I have been itching to get back behind the wheel since the new year to be honest.

“Spending the last week here at Bathurst for the 12 hour has been great, I’ve been able to familiarize myself with the track again before we head out later this week, it’s never a bad place to get some laps in.

“It’s great to have Woody joining us, it’s been awesome with him so far, we get along really well off track so I am excited to work closely with him this year.

“It looks like it the weather could be a bit of a wildcard early in the weekend which could throw a spanner in the works, we didn’t get many wet runs in last year so this will make the first round interesting!”
