Wet… the best way to describe Saturday on the not so sunny Gold Coast.

In the first of two 300km races around the streets of Surfers Paradise, Scott Pye and Warren Luff finished the day in 11th, with James Courtney and Jack Perkins in 14th.

Conditions were terrible all day, so to bring both cars home in the top 15, nice and straight was a solid day for the team.

It started off with James and Scott doing their first ever laps in the wet around here in a qualifying session, which certainly isn’t the ideal preparation.

A late red flag came at the wrong time for the team, because after it went back green, the rain got heavier. That meant Car 02 was set to start out of P13, and Car 22 P18 for the race.

All co-drivers in the field started the race, where visibility was next to none.

Luffy did a good job to move forward a few places and keep the car straight, but unfortunately for Jacko, he had a moment at the end of the back straight, forcing him up the escape road momentarily.

Not all was lost though, he drove his way back up to 18th before the co-drivers handed over to the main drivers on lap 35 and 36 once their minimum laps had been completed.

Despite the conditions, and the proximity of the concrete walls surrounding the track, it was a relatively uneventful affair for both cars from then on in.

Scott drove his car up to 11th, and JC up to 14th, but they just couldn’t find that little bit extra to pass the groups in front of them and move further up.

Tomorrow, we do it all again, with a qualifying session in the morning, a top-10 shootout, and then another 300km race.

The cars are straight, and ready to rock and roll tomorrow.

In even better news, the forecast looks much more promising, so we should be in the dry all day.

MATHEW NILSSON – GENERAL MANAGER OF MOTORSPORT

“It was very wet conditions today, and it was the first time we’ve run here in the wet in a long time, so we went into qualifying relatively blind.

“We started the session okay, but it got a bit dryer in the middle and we missed the boat a bit with tyre pressure.

“In the end it was a pretty straight-forward race, despite the difficult conditions. The guys did a great job at the start to have a solid opening stint and then hand it over to the main guys still in the mix.

“It was a solid day… not too bad but could have been better.

“Weather looks better tomorrow so we will have another crack at it.”
