It’s been a day filled with milestones, with Woody collecting his first ever race win, a double podium for Chaz, the team securing 100 pole positions and 300 podiums, you couldn’t script it!
Perth has been a happy hunting ground for the team in the past, we came into the weekend with confidence, ready to take on what was ahead of us.
This morning started off with two back-to-back qualifying sessions, the first on the Dunlop Soft tyre, both cars easily made it through to the top 10 qualifying session, Chaz and Ryan were on it and replicated their 2024 Saturday qualifying session by locking out the front row again!
The second qualifying session would be tougher; it was on the Super-Soft tyre which no one in the field had run this weekend except for Ryan.
The Mobil 1 Truck Assist No. 2 was a rocket in the first part of Race 15 qualifying, setting the fastest lap after the first run, deciding to take a gamble he parked up in the lane opting to not do another run. Meanwhile, Chaz went out for a second run, he was on his fast lap, chasing the rear and made a small mistake which cost him his lap, finishing up P11 just out of the second part qualifying.
Part two of this session had the team on the edge of their seats, Ryan was the only person in the top 10 who had a fresh set of rubber under him, he didn’t buckle under the pressure and put together an incredible lap, setting a new lap record and securing his first ever pole position.
Race 14
Ryan Wood: 1st
Chaz Mostert: 3rd
The pressure was on, hearts were thumping as the lights went out for Race 14, both cars launched off the line strong with Ryan slotting behind Chaz into turn two, keeping it clean in the opening laps.
Setting the fastest lap in the early part of the race, Ryan took the lead on lap 10 with Chaz giving plenty of racing room, settling into the rhythm making a strong gap on the field behind.
Feeney, in third place, was the first of the leaders to pit, Ryan followed the next lap with the pit crew performing well under pressure. Ryan came out of the lane with a paper width ahead of Feeney, making his car as wide as possible to keep him in his rearview mirrors.
Chaz stayed out, pushing the car to its limits to minimise the undercut advantage from the two cars ahead, coming into the lane to take four tyres. Unfortunately it was a slow stop which brought Chaz out onto the track effectively P5.
Fighting back strong, the Mobil 1 Optus Racing No. 25 was hungry to move forward, setting the new race lap record, diving the car down the inside of Brodie Kostecki for P4, one spot away from the final spot on the podium.
It was a nail biting last few laps, with 8 laps to go, Chaz continued to work his was forwarding, sling shotting his car down the inside of Broc Feeney for P3, further up the track Will Brown was hunting down Ryan for the lead of the race, having taken four tyres vs Ryan’s two tyres.
The heart rates were up on the final seven laps with Will Brown on Ryan’s rear bumper ready to pounce on one small mistake, the Mobil 1 Truck Assist Racing No. 2 was an absolute rocket, and Ryan didn’t fold under pressure, in fact he started building a gap between the car behind.
It was an emotional final lap for both Ryan and the Team, being the first car to cross the line, a moment Ryan has dreamt about for years, finally becoming a reality.
A day to remember with Ryan’s first race win and a double podium for Chaz who finished up P3, a solid start to the weekend but there was more to come.
Race 15
Ryan Wood: 24th
Chaz Mostert: 3rd
It was a great start off the line for Chaz who worked his way up from P11 to P9 whilst Ryan dropped down to P3, starting on the dirty side of the track struggling to get grip off the line.
Chaz was the biggest mover in the opening stint of the race, up to P7, quickly hunting down the cars ahead.
Also working their way forward was Ryan who passed both Matt Payne and Cam Waters to take the lead, having the strongest pace in the field, settling into a rhythm.
After taking the lead, the Mobil 1 Truck Assist Racing No. 25 was building a strong gap to the field behind until a componentry failure sent Ryan to the rear of the field, coming straight into the garage for repairs. After 11 laps, the crew managed to get the car back out on track to salvage as many points as possible, definitely a what could have been moment.
Chaz came into the lane to take three tyres coming out effectively P4, with Matt Payne coming out on track the following lap, Chaz aggressively passed him to take the final spot on the podium.
Hunting down Will Brown in front, Chaz ultimately ran out of laps to make a pass with his tyres overheating from following closely for a few laps.
As they say, Motorsport sure is a rollercoaster, overall today is one for the Team’s history books, a massive thank you to all of our partners, fans and friends of the team, we wouldn’t be to do this without you.
We go again tomorrow, the on-track action kicks off at 11am local time for qualifying, make sure you tune in.
Chaz Mostert
I had an amazing car in that last race, I didn’t expect to be standing on the podium, but the crew really tuned up the car between sessions and it paid off.
We came into this weekend feeling confident, it’s a track that is a happy hunting ground for the team, I am grateful to bank some good points today after the last round.
It’s awesome to see the young buck grab his first race win today, it was pretty special being able to share the podium with him for that.
Ryan Wood
Today is a day I will remember forever, my first pole position and my first race win, it’s been a pretty emotional day, I can’t thank the crew enough for putting such a strong package together this weekend.
That last race didn’t go to plan, I was out in the lead before a component failure which put us in the pits for over 10 laps, it’s moments like these that I know I have the best crew behind me, they didn’t give up, they got straight into it to get me back out on the track.
We have another day tomorrow, we can go into Sunday feeling strong, but we know everyone strengthens their package overnight, I’m sure we will do the same, it’s all to play for tomorrow, redemption day.
