It was a rollercoaster of a day to end the weekend at Sandown, with Chaz Mostert finishing P4 and Ryan Wood fighting to P23 after an early wheel nut issue.
It was another strong qualifying session for both sides of the garage this morning with both cars making the shootout. In mixed conditions, we locked out the second row with Chaz in P3 and Ryan P4.
As the cars rolled out onto the grid, the weather was a big story line, with dark clouds looming overhead.
Both cars got off the line strong, with Chaz maintaining P3 and Ryan P4 in the opening laps.
Just six laps in, the skies open. Ryan dove into the lane immediately for wets. Unfortunately, when changing the front left wheel, there was an issue with a stripped wheel nut which in turn, left debris on the spindle. That meant a new wheel couldn’t be put on the left front until rectified – dropping him seven laps down.
Chaz boxed two laps later for wet tyres, coming out in P8 but struggled for pace against the leaders as the conditions worsened. Opting for an undercut for his final stop, Chaz switched to the soft tyre and found more speed, climbing back into podium contenting and rejoining in P3.
Mid-stint, Chaz was chasing down P2, until he found a wet spot on the track taking an adventure off road and hitting the wall, which dropped him to P9.
Refusing to give up, Chaz reset and seized the opportunity when Waters and Payne ahead tangled, jumping four spots. A few laps later, he made a clean move on Kostecki for P4.
After a great recovery drive, Chaz crossed the line P4, while Ryan pushed to the very end to finish P23 after the early setback.
Next stop: Adelaide, where Chaz will battle against three others for the 2025 Supercars Championship in the Grand Final. We will head back to the workshop and make sure we roll out with a strong package for the streets of Adelaide.
Ryan Wood
“Another weird weekend for us on the Mobil 1 Truck Assist Racing No. 2 side. Saturday was awesome getting a podium, pole and Chazzie through to the final four.
“The race was going pretty good, sitting in P4 when we came in for our first stop of the day but unfortunately the wheel wouldn’t come off so the boys had to work overtime to get that sorted.
“Pretty gutted to be honest, I feel like we just can’t catch a break. We will bounce back in Adelaide.”
Chaz Mostert
“Sandown as a whole, what an amazing weekend for us as a team, what a dream Saturday to lock out the front row alongside my buddy Woody.
“I was running my own race at the beginning, we were a bit compromised with some of the things we took into the race, but we learnt lots about our race car today going into Adelaide.
“Still proud of our weekend, will use the bad run today as a bit of fuel and motivation to come out swinging. There’s no doubt we have the car to try and do the job in Adelaide and the team is firing all cylinders at the moment so I’m looking forward to the opportunity at the last round to have a crack.”
