A strong start to a big weekend for the team, with a double podium finish with Chaz Mostert securing second place and Ryan Wood right behind him in third.
With $50,000 on the line and the first of three races this weekend setting the tone, the pressure was on from the outset.
The day began with the final practice session which saw both cars near the top of the time sheets. Unfortunately, Chaz made contact with the Turn 8 wall, forcing him to miss most of the session.
Qualifying followed with rain looming. Despite the changing conditions, both drivers continued their strong form with Chaz starting on the front row and Ryan not far behind in P5.
Shortly after qualifying, heavy rain hit the track, delaying the start of the race due to standing water. A wet race was declared, conditions that both Chaz and Ryan enjoy.
Chaz was quick in the opening laps, capitalising when Fenney ran wide to briefly take the lead. Kostecki soon reclaimed the position, but with the championship picture in mind and lack of car pace in comparison, Chaz avoided unnecessary risk.
Ryan was confident in the wet, battling Murray for P4 early on before making a clean pass on lap 4. With eyes forward to Broc Feeney in third, Ryan set fastest lap after fastest lap, hunting him down and eventually taking third place.
The Mobil 1 Optus Racing No. 25 was hunting down Kostecki in the lead, taking 0.7 seconds per lap off him, with only one second between them until Randle hit the wall bringing out the safety car with 12 laps to go.
With Chaz sitting in P2 and Ryan P3, the team needed to execute on Chaz’s stop to ensure Ryan didn’t have to double stack and that’s exactly what they did. With both drivers coming out of the lane maintaining position.
A few laps later, whilst under the safety car, the race was then red flagged due to track conditions which meant Chaz and Ryan would each get a trophy to add to their collections.
We get to do it all again tomorrow but there are more points on the line. Speed and execution will be critical as the fight continues, the Team will be doing everything they can to ensure we deliver.
Ryan Wood
Stoked to come away with a podium today, it’s a good start but we want to be a couple more positions up tomorrow and the next day.
An awesome stop from the boys today in the lane, the pressure was on but they delivered when it mattered.
A massive thanks to all of the fans to stuck around during the bad weather, it was awesome to see you all out there braving it.
Chaz Mostert
I’m pumped to get another podium and good points to start off the weekend, we have a solid foundation to build off tomorrow.
It was a pretty tough race to be honest, every single race counts this weekend, throwing the weather in the mix made it a bit tougher as one mistake and it can all be over, but the team executed really well.
We go again tomorrow with more points on the line we want to be repeating what we did today by starting up the pointy end, let’s get after it.
