Scott Pye and Warren Luff have claimed second position at the 2017 Bathurst 1000. What a day for them, and the team.

Both Scotty and Luffy drove flawlessly for the 1000 kilometres around the mountain, charging forward in the last stint to stand on the second step of the podium.

Unfortunately for the other side of the garage, their race copped a major blow with 20 laps to go, when JC tagged the wall over the top of the mountain, forcing him in the garage for the majority of what was left.

They were running 10th at the time, with fuel on board to get home.

The day spiced up while we were on the grid, as the rain began to fall.

The field started on wets, as JC and Luffy took the start line.

Luffy’s first stint, against the main drivers, was a defining moment of the race. After starting 20th, he found himself as high as eighth before handing the keys to Scotty.

All four drivers hardly put a foot wrong all day. Jack Perkins was constantly moving forward throughout, putting in a really solid drive.

The majority of the race was wet, which meant it was lengthy, but went relatively uninterrupted race, which was surprising.

JC jumped in for his final stint at the 99-lap mark, while Luffy and Scotty swapped places on lap 115, setting it up for an exciting finish.

The biggest guessing game came late in the race. There was a decision to be made whether you pit before the last fuel window to take slicks, or stay out on wets, and wait for the magic number.

While that was happening, JC was handed a drive through penalty for weaving behind the safety car once its lights were out.

That put him back in 13th, while Scott was in p6.

Another safety car with 27 to go bunched the field up.

That last 25 laps were nothing short of crazy. Sprinkles of rain, worries about fuel, more safety cars and accidents, and JC hitting the wall.

Scott Pye was as cold as ice in the closing laps, withstanding challenges from Van Gisbergen and Coulthard, securing second spot. It was the second defining moment, and one he can be very proud of.

It was an incredible day for the team that was built from hard work.

This one is for you guys though. Thank you for all your support this year, it’s been incredible, and we wouldn’t be here without you.

“It’s so cool being on the podium at Bathurst. I’m so happy to get this result, and so happy for the team as a whole. Everyone here deserves this, they have worked so hard this year.

“It was difficult out there, the conditions were crazy. Full credit to Luffy, he did a mega job to get us right up there, which set up our day.

Safety cars came and went, but we felt like a couple of them didn’t work in our favour, and a couple did. That’s what Bathurst is about, you’ve got to keep looking forward and staying positive.

That restart at the end was crazy.

It took a while to get going, it was great fun, the conditions at the end made it even better.

“This is amazing. To be on a Bathurst podium with this team, in this car, is incredible. Everyone in the team deserves this.

“It’s an amazing event, and to finish the race on a high on the podium, and for it to be Scott’s first here is extra special.

“We had a really good overall day today, everyone played their part, the car was good, and Scott did an incredible job at the end to bring it home in second.”

“We had the fuel advantage, but it came undone over the top.

“Today didn’t end how we would have liked but there were still some positives to take from the weekend.

“We are disappointed now, but we made the shootout, and were in the hunt at the end.

“The race was tricky today, especially at the end with the conditions changing, but that’s Bathurst.

“Eyes forward to the Gold Coast now.”
