Chaz Mostert has claimed his sixth podium of 2021, finishing third in Race 17 in Townsville. It was a dramatic turn-around in form since last weekend, and a reward for the hard work that has happened in between events.

Unfortunately for Bryce Fullwood, an early drive-through penalty put him out of contention, finishing in 22nd.

Mostert’s day started in a better position, making the shootout, before starting the 110km, 38-lap race from fifth.

He avoided the drama early, before getting past Davison before the only pitstop of the race.

After just taking rear tyres, he tried to chase down De Pasquale, who would go on to finish second, falling just short.

Despite crossing the line in fourth, a 15-second penalty to Whincup for speeding in pit lane promoted Chaz to third, and kept him third in the championship fight.

For Bryce, he got off to a flyer off the line, but after a bottleneck on lap 1, and subsequent contact with Jones, he was handed a drive-through penalty, which put him out of the fight with no safety car.

The team kept him out as long as possible in order to save tyres for tomorrows race.

Tomorrow, we have two more 38-lap races to round out the weekend.

Chaz Mostert

“Very happy with that. It was a tough weekend last week for us all, even practice and the early part of qualifying… it’s been an emotional rollercoaster.

“It’s great to reward all the guys and girls at WAU for their hard work, we had a bit of luck today, but we turned a car that was struggling to get into the top 10 last week into a car that was in the top five on speed, it was a big turnaround.

“Still got some work to do overnight, so we will keep fighting, and see how we go tomorrow.”

Bryce Fullwood

“There was stuff flying everywhere early in the race today, which didn’t really leave me with anywhere to go, so the drive-through was unfortunate, and ruined our day.

“In the end we had an eye towards tomorrow, but a disappointing day all round.

“The good news is we’ve got a chance tomorrow to turn our luck around, and finish on a positive.”
