Round 1 of 2023 Supercars season is a wrap! Chaz Mostert capped off an extremely positive weekend with a pair of second place finishes, and the Championship lead! He pushed hard for the top spot on the podium all afternoon, just running out of tyre life late in the race.

For Nick, he had to salvage some points today, with an issue plaguing him all race. We will head back to Clayton and diagnose the cause of that one before the Grand Prix.

After a positive qualifying and race on Saturday, Chaz continued on his strong pace qualifying sixth for race 2 securing him a spot in the Top 10 Shootout. Chaz put it all out there during the Shootout, resulting in the Mobil 1 Optus Racing No.25 starting off the front row, in second, 0.005 seconds off pole.

After a scorching hot race on Saturday, Sunday’s race wasn’t going to be any easier.

Chaz had a great start off the line and took the lead into turn one. Due to a crash off the start line, the race was red flagged. Once the barriers on the front straight were fixed, Chaz restarted the race and maintained the lead for 85 out of the 89 laps, just running out of tyre life in the last few laps.

After last night’s verdict, P2 for Mostert on Saturday followed by P2 on Sunday means Chaz finishes off the first round in the Championship lead.

There are plenty of positives to take from this weekend and eyes are looking forward to the Grand Prix with cars hitting the track on 30th April.

Chaz Mostert

“It’s pretty cool to leave here with a couple of trophies and the Championship lead, to consider where we have come from in the last eight weeks to where we are now it’s incredible. It’s a testament to the entire team, not only the ones at track and the workshop but the families at home as well because it’s been hard on every single one of them – we owe them a lot.

“We just didn’t have the tyre life late in the stint we needed to win today, we just need to look after them a bit better, but we learnt a hell of a lot this weekend and there is plenty to work with.

“Attention moves to the Grand Prix pretty quickly; we will be fully focused on that as of tonight and hope to keep the momentum rolling.”

Nick Percat

“Tough day that one, race pace was strong until midrace, until it all turned upside down. Not much we can do there, but we will get our heads together back at the workshop and find out what went wrong.

“An amazing result for the team with Chaz finishing off the round with two trophies.

“We have the Grand Prix coming up soon so we will get the Mobil 1 NTI Racing No. 2 back, strip her down, find out what’s happened and come out swinging next round.”
