Chaz Mostert has secured his spot in the semi-finals after a dominant race win here at The Gold Coast 500.
Qualifying kicked off the day, with both Chaz and Ryan focus on making the Top 10 Shootout – and they did so comfortably. Chaz setting the second fastest time, while Ryan slotted in just behind him in third.
It was Ryan’s turn to take on the shootout first, and he delivered under the pressure, maximising every corner to secure his second-ever pole position. Chaz wasn’t far behind, starting out of P4 for the 250km race.
Lining up in the box seat, Ryan had a great start off the line, building a small gap over the opening laps. Unfortunately, an issue with the fuel tank caused a leak and the car had to come into the garage for repairs.
Once the car was fixed, seven laps later, the focus shifted from chasing the race win to completing 75% of the race distance to be classified. Ryan needed to collect as many points as possible to stay in contention for the top seven heading into Sandown.
Meanwhile, Chaz was comfortably sitting in third early in the race until a signage issue on track caused a safety car with the entire field coming into the lane to pit. Things got pretty tight in the front of pit lane with Kai Aillen blocking the fast lane, Chaz had to use his front bumper a couple of times to get past him.
From there, it was Chaz’s race. He began setting the fastest lap after the fastest lap, hunting down Feeney for the lead and making the move three laps later, the fastest car out on track by a margin.
After his final stop, Chaz rejoined effectively P4, 12 seconds behind the leader, Reynolds. He didn’t stay there for long, delivering qualifying laps continuously and quickly closing down the gap. With 12 laps to go, he dove down the inside of Reynolds to take the lead and never looked back.
Chaz crossed the line to take home his second win of the season which locked himself into the semi-finals at Sandown.
It was a gut-wrenching result for Ryan, after such a strong start but his fight isn’t over, a race win tomorrow keeps him in the game. Chaz and the team are willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen.
Ryan Wood
“I’m pretty gutted, we put ourselves in the best possible today starting off the front row, the crew did a great job getting the car back out on track to salvage some points.
“Pretty cool to get my second ever pole position today, the car has been hooked up all weekend.
“We have another shot at it tomorrow, we will definitely be going for the race win, we know we have the car pace to do it.”
Chaz Mostert
“Feels so good to get a win on home turn and book a ticket through to the semi finals at Sandown!
“So proud of the guys and girls in the Walkinshaw Andretti United team, they built an impressive supersoft car, I gave the tyres a workout, but the car was on fire!
“I’m so happy for myself but I’m gutted for Ryan, we both had quick cars. We will do whatever we need to tomorrow to make sure he makes it to Sandown.”
