We’re headed back to the Apple Isle for Round 2 of the 2022 Supercars Championship this weekend, as Championship Leader Chaz Mostert and Nick Percat look to make it a memorable round.
It was just 12-months ago Chaz Mostert won the final race of the weekend, marking his first with WAU. We’re hoping that repeats!
Format
It’s a compact, two-day format where track time is limited.
Saturday morning sees two quick practice sessions, before a three-part knockout qualifying session, and a 44-lap race to round out the day.
Sunday sees Chaz and Nick roll straight into back-to-back qualifying sessions that set the grid for the two 44-lap races on Sunday afternoon.
Tyres
After the debut of the all-new Dunlop SuperSoft tyre in Sydney, this weekend, it is all we will use!
That’s a bit different to Sydney, as we only got one set to use per race, so keep an eye on how they hold up for a full weekend of running.
The Track
Symmons Plains is a unique track. It’s only 2.41kms long, so the lap times are regularly in the low 50 second barrier. The field spread is small as well, with most cars, if not all, within a second of each other in qualifying.
The turn-four hairpin is one of the most well-known corners in Australian motorsport. It requires near-on full lock to get around, and is the slowest corner we go to all season.
The top of the track slopes down to the apex, so it’s a great passing opportunity, but also the chance to hang around the outside and drag the inside car down the back straight.
Pitstops
No fuel, just tyres, which means the race will be on in the lane.
The Pitstop Challenge returns in 2022, and this is the first round, so being quick in the lane will be essential.
Weather
The weather looks very good. Top of early 20’s both days, and no rain on the forecast.

“I’m really excited about this weekend, I love Tasmania, obviously it was kind to us last year, and Sydney was a great way to start the year.
“We’ve got to keep that rolling now though, it’s been a big two weeks since then, and everyone is keen to see how we look this weekend.
“With the two-day format and the SuperSoft, practice is going to be really important to be on the money early, it’ll make the rest of the weekend a lot easier.”
Nick Percat
“Really pumped for this weekend, and have been since Sydney to be honest.
“Sunday was tough, but there were some really positive signs throughout the weekend which we will take into this weekend that’s for sure.
“I couldn’t speak more highly of this team and how it’s been settling back in, we’ve put our heads down since round 1, so I’m really keen to get stuck into the weekend in the Mobil 1 NTI Racing No. 2 that’s for sure.”
